Chairman of U-S Airways says carrier is talking merger with America West
MONTGOMERY, Ala. The chairman of U-S Airways says the airline is in advanced merger talks with America West. David Bronner tells The Associated Press talks have been going on for a few months but no deal is imminent.
Bronner says America West is a good potential merger partner because it has a West Coast focus, whereas U-S Airways deals mainly with the East Coast.
He says U-S Airways will "do whatever we need to survive."
The nation's second-largest carrier has been in Chapter Eleven bankruptcy protection since last September. It was the second filing in two years.
A spokesman for America West's parent company isn't willing to discuss what he calls a "market rumor."
