PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- The Providence police officer killed in the line of duty last weekend has been promoted posthumously. James Allen was promoted late yesterday afternoon from detective to the rank of detective sergeant. The Department also awarded Allen Medal of Valor and Purple Heart ribbons for exhibiting exemplary valor and exemplary service to the community. A wake for Allen is planned tomorrow. His funeral is scheduled for Thursday.
