Annual California women's conference opens as nurses protest
Tuesday,December7,2004,6:25 PM
LONG BEACH, Calif. Thousands of women filled a California convention center today to get advice on work, families and sex from Oprah Winfrey, Queen Noor of Jordan, Jamie Lee Curtis and the state's first lady, Maria Shriver. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger opened the annual Governor's Conference on Women and Families. But his only advice came when registered nurses unfurled a banner protesting his decision to delay state-mandated improvements in nurse-patient ratios. Said the governor: "Pay no attention to those voices over there. They are only the special interests."
Attendees praised the conferences, one saying she'd been inspired by past events to get her bachelor's degree. Another cited the help she'd gotten in finding resources and support while caring for her ailing mother.
The conference featured a variety of speakers and hundreds of information booths and vendors.
