Officials say Delaware River spill caused by discarded pipe
PHILADELPHIA Investigators say an oil spill in the Delaware River was caused by another type of pollution -- a discarded pipe lying on the river bottom. Officials say sonar tests pinpointed the 15-foot U-shaped pipe. Later, traces of paint on the pipe were traced to an oil tanker.
The Greek ship dumped nearly a half (m) million gallons of crude oil into the river last month in a spill that stretched across 70 miles.
The tanker had been trying to dock when the pipe tore a six-foot hole in its hull.
Officials think the cleanup will cost (m) millions of dollars.
