Narragansett Tribe holds annual August meeting
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (AP) -- The Narragansett Indian Tribe gathered this weekend for its 329th recorded annual August meeting.

The event included dance and music.

For the tribe, it was a chance to celebrate its history. For the public, it was a rare glimpse into the tribes traditions.

The event drew a larger crowd than usual, something the organizers attribute to the attention the ongoing casino debate has brought the tribe.

Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas tells The Providence Journal the event offered an opportunity to raise the tribes profile

He says the tribe likes (quote) to see as many people as we can so people can learn about us.
