Rhode Island holiday marks JapanÔŅĹs surrender
PROVIDENCE , R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island is observing Victory Day today.
The state holiday marks Japan ÔŅĹs surrender during World War Two. Rhode Island is the only state with an official holiday to mark the event.
The state has observed the holiday since 1948. Foes have long tried to abolish the holiday, but veterans groups and labor unions have successfully fought to keep it.
