Same-Sex Marriage to Go Before Senate Committee
(Providence-AP) -- Separate bills on both sides of the gay marriage debate are scheduled for a hearing in the Senate today.
The hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee comes during a national debate on gay marriage. The issue has gotten more attention since the highest court in nearby Massachusetts ruled it unconstitutional to prohibit same-sex couples from marrying.
One of the bills before the Rhode Island committee would define marriage as between a man and a woman. The other would allow same-sex couples to marry. Both would amend the state's long-standing marriage law, but NOT the state Constitution.
Supporters and opponents of same-sex unions are likely to testify at the hearing.
