Out in the Cold

(HealthDayNews) -- Even when it's cold outside, children often play outdoors. But because they have larger body surfaces for their weights than adults do, kids lose heat more quickly, according to Boston Children's Hospital.

Here are some ways to prevent cold-weather problems:

  • Dress your child in several layers, and make the outermost layer tightly woven and waterproof.
  • Make sure your child wears a hat, since the most body heat is lost through the head.
  • Remind your child to cover his or her ears at all times.
  • If either gloves or shoes get wet, have your child change into a dry pair.
  • Make sure your child isn't outdoors for too long without taking breaks inside.
