PETA billboard causes a stir
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

(Providence-AP) -- The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is urging people to go vegetarian with a billboard that shows the Virgin Mary cradling a chicken carcass.

The billboard seen by motorists near exit Four on Interstate 195 East includes the phrase (quote) Go Vegetarian. Its an Immaculate Conception.

PETA says its message is designed to highlight that animals raised for food are mistreated and that vegetarianism combats the practice.

The group says it chose Rhode Island to begin its campaign, because it has the highest percentage of Catholics in the nation.

The Diocese of Providence, the body that oversees the Catholic church in Rhode Island, was studying the issue.

Providence Mayor David Cicilline was out of town and unavailable for comment.
