Border Dispute To Be Discussed
(Providence-AP) -- A commission charged with determining the boundary between Rhode Island and Connecticut is holding its first meeting today. The nine-member legislative commission was created after the attorneys general in both states called for a study of the border. The group meets at the Statehouse today.
Connecticut has created a similar legislative group, and the two will try to reach an agreement about the disputed boundary. Any compact would have to be approved by both legislatures. The dispute means twenty two acres of Hopkinton could end up in Connecticut.
The sixty-five-mile border between the states most recently came under scrutiny when officials in North Stonington, Connecticut used a new mapping technology to conduct the town's 2000 tax revaluation. Officials determined the boundary line established in 1840 was wrong.
