Spain holds state funeral for agents killed in Iraq
Madrid, Spain-AP -- A further pall has been cast over the deaths of seven Spanish military intelligence agents killed south of Baghdad Saturday with word that they may have been betrayed from within. The Defense Ministry and intelligence service have voiced suspicions that agents working in Iraq were being targeted systematically and the attack may have been made possible by a mole within the service in Iraq.
News reports say suspicions are being fueled by the fact that the agents made last-minute changes in their plans Saturday and still were attacked.
Seven coffins bearing the bodies of the agents were taken from the Defense Ministry's military hospital to the Madrid headquarters of the National Intelligence Center. A nationally televised funeral service was held at midday.
Bereaved family members received personal condolences from King Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia and top government officials.
