Democrats call for independent investigation

Capitol Hill-AP -- Congressional Democrats say a Justice Department Investigation into who leaked the identity of a C-I-A operative isn't good enough.

They're calling for a special counsel to investigate reports that the leak came from senior Bush administration officials.

In letters to the president and Attorney General John Ashcroft, they say a special counsel is "the best possible means of avoiding serious conflicts of interest."

The operative's name showed up in a newspaper column shortly after her husband, a former U-S ambassador, challenged the president's claim that Iraq tried to buy uranium in Africa.

White House officials vigorously denied that they played any role in disclosing the identity of the C-I-A operative.
