Amtrak asks court to halt Friday walkout

Printer Friendly Version

Washington-AP -- Amtrak has gone to court to keep thousands of workers on the job later this week.

Unions representing some eight-thousand workers plan on walking out Friday, to protest a lack of government funding for the railway.

The Transport Workers Union of America says the goal is to urge the public to contact government officials and force them to give more money to Amtrak.

A union spokesman says the walkout would probably keep Amtrak from operating at all on Friday.

An Amtrak spokesman says there's no doubt the railway needs more money -- but he says this isn't the way to get it. He says a walkout would cause problems for tens of thousands of travelers.

The railway is asking a federal judge in Washington for an injunction and a hearing later this week.
