Injuries give rookies an opportunity to step out
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

(Foxboro-AP) -- The release of Lawyer Milloy and the injuries suffered by the Patriots defense in the first three weeks of the season is giving several rookies a chance to show what they can do.

One who took advantage of the opportunity yesterday was cornerback Asante Samuel, a fourth-round pick from Central Florida.  In what may have been the biggest play of yesterdays 23-to-16 win over the Jets, Samuel picked off a Vinny Testaverde pass early in the fourth quarter and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown.

Another rookie defensive back, Eugene Wilson, started his second straight game at free safety.

First-round pick Ty Warren saw more action on the defensive line in yesterdays game and Dan Kleckowho was also chosen in the fourth round of last Aprils draftsaw his first action of the season on the defensive line and at linebacker.
