Patriots 23, Jets 16

FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) -- The New England Patriots have already lost a Washington, a Roosevelt and a Johnson to injuries.

Memo to presidential namesakes Eugene Wilson and Rodney Harrison: Be extra careful on the way home.

You cant really think about people getting hurt, Wilson said Sunday after the Patriots beat the New York Jets 23-16 but lost a key defender for the third consecutive week. You just have to move on and make the best of it, and thats what we did.

Nose tackle Ted Washington broke his leg Sunday and is expected to miss a month or more, the most serious wound in the game for a defense that had already lost linebackers Roosevelt Colvin and Ted Johnson. Receiver David Patten hurt his right leg and didnt return.

Cornerback Ty Law missed several series after rolling his right ankle, and Tom Brady took a shot to his throwing elbow; although he was grimacing in pain when it happened, the quarterback did not miss any snaps and says hell be ready for next weeks game against Washington.

Were already down in numbers as it is, said Law, who talked coach Bill Belichick into putting him back in the game in the second half. I dont think anybody in the NFL right now doesnt have some type of injury. As long as I can run and keep up with guys, Im going to stay in the game.

Asked what his injury was, Brady said, Nothing.

Keep asking, he said, knowing Belichick likes to share as little information as possible, youll keep getting that same answer.

And the Patriots (2-1) wont get any sympathy from the Jets (0-3), who had beaten New England in five consecutive games. They were without cornerback Donnie Abraham (broken shoulder) and quarterback Chad Pennington, who is expected to miss at least half the season because of a dislocated wrist.

Abrahams replacement, Ray Mickens, was called for pass interference in the end zone one play before Bradys 1-yard touchdown run that made it 16-9. And Penningtons replacement, Vinny Testaverde, threw an interception that Asante Samuel returned 55 yards for a touchdown to give New England a 23-9 lead 11 seconds into the fourth quarter.

The Jets came right back on Testaverdes 29-yard scoring pass to Wayne Chrebet less than 2 minutes later. But they came no closer as they converted just one of 13 third-down opportunities.

The only other scoring came on three field goals apiece that left it 9-9. The Jets tried a fake field goal in the second quarter, but erstwhile center Kevin Mawae dropped holder Dan Stryzinskis pass.

I am trying to get something going. I am trying to get some energy in this team, coach Herman Edwards said. Thats how you build momentum in your team, not kicking field goals. ... You are not going to win in this league kicking field goals.

Testaverde started his third game for Pennington and moved into eighth place on the NFLs career list with 40,300 yards passing.  His 264 yards Sunday moved him past Johnny Unitas 40,239; Joe Montana is seventh with 40,551.

It is irrelevant right now, with us being 0-3, Testaverde said. I would give it all back for a win. I know it will make me feel better.

Notes: The Jets started 1-3 last year but won the AFC East on a tiebreaker with a 9-7 record. ... New York outgained New England 329-294 and sacked Brady five times. Testaverde wasnt sacked. ...  The Patriots ran for 147 yards. The Jets have allowed 164.7 yards rushing per game. ... The Jets managed just 65 yards on 17 carries.  Curtis Martin ran for 53 yards Sunday after entering the game with only 80. Its almost there but were still not doing enough to help the team win, he said.
