Triple E disease shows up in mosquito pool
(Providence-AP) -- The Triple E virus now has turned up in a mosquito pool in
Washington County.
The state Department of Health collected the infected mosquitoes nine days ago. Today, officials confirmed they have Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
The virus has claimed two emus and at least one horse so far in southern Rhode Island.
Health officials say the poolÔŅĹs location is in a different area from where the animals were infected.
Triple E is carried by mosquitoes. ItÔŅĹs a neurological disease that causes swelling of the brain and can lead to coma or death.
No humans have contracted the disease so far. Officials urge residents to use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and long pants.
