State taking precautions against monkeypox
(Providence-AP) -- There's no known monkeypox in Rhode Island but the state is taking precautions to prevent the virus from coming here.
The state Department of Environmental Management has quarantined any and all of the seven types of animals that have been banned by the U-S government and are being housed at Rhode Island pet shops.
The federal government banned the sale of prairie dogs and prohibited the importation of six kinds of African rodents earlier this week.
During its investigation, D-E-M has found no evidence of the disease in any of the pet shop animals recently imported to or sold in Rhode Island.
D-E-M says the quarantine is only a precautionary measure.
