Washington-AP -- It's a big day for Attorney General John Ashcroft and the Justice Department's new anti-terrorism powers.

Ashcroft is expected to appear before the House Judiciary Committee in the morning -- and will likely give his first public response to a critical report.

The Justice Department's inspector general found "significant problems" in how the agency detained terrorism suspects after the September eleventh attacks.

Ashcroft could also be grilled about the Patriot Act which gave his agency broad new powers to fight terrorism. Lawmakers will decide whether or not to renew and expand those powers and are likely to ask Ashcroft what he recommends and specifics on why.
