Transurethral Resection Of The Prostate (TURP)
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

Definition

A surgical technique to remove the prostate gland in men.

Alternative

Extract of saw palmetto, a food supplement available in most drug stores, has been shown in European studies to relieve some symptoms of enlarged prostate. It may be as effective as many other medications currently used for this purpose. It should not substitute, however, for a complete evaluation by your physician.

Questions

What tests need to be done to diagnose the condition? What type of treatment do you recommend? What self-help home measures can be tried to relieve the symptoms? Are there any risks or complications to the wait-and-see policy? Will surgery be recommended? Which type? What is the procedure? Will anesthesia be given? What are the risks? What can be expected after the surgery? Does a specialist need to be consulted?
