Environmental agency to begin cleanup of Tiverton site
TIVERTON, R.I. The Environmental Protection Agency is beginning cleanup work at a Tiverton site this week. The site is on A Connell Street and is about a third of an acre in size. It includes a single-family residence.
The property has shown signs of mercury contamination. The EPA says it appears to be the only property in the area with mercury contamination. It's suspected to have come from a hat factory that operated there about a century ago.
The site is located in an area where the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is overseeing an investigation conducted by New England Gas Company.
The company is looking into the contamination caused by coal gasification waste that historically was buried in the area.
