Feds release highway money to R.I. after dispute
PROVIDENCE, R.I. Better late than never: Rhode Island has gotten about 5 million dollars from the Federal Highway Administration -- after a months-long dispute. The funds were frozen last September, after federal officials accused the Rhode Island Department of Transportation of, "flagrant unaccountability" in spending on several projects.
The state was able to continue work on the projects, but lost out on the interest the federal funds would have generated.
The dispute followed complaints that the Shire Corporation was not paying some bills on time. The federal agency took issue with the DOT for allowing Shire to miss the payments.
Shire has blamed the DOT for not paying it quickly enough to support its projects.
