Former White House counsel Lloyd Cutler dies at 87
WASHINGTON Former White House counsel Lloyd Cutler, who served Presidents Carter and Clinton, has died at his Washington home. He was 87. A family friend says Cutler had been sick for quite a while and had been suffering complications from a broken hip.
Cutler joined the Carter White House in 1979 and advised the president on the Iran hostage crisis and the SALT Two arms treaty with the Soviet Union.
He returned to the White House in 1994 to help Clinton deal with the investigation into the Whitewater real-estate deal.
Most recently, Cutler served on President Bush's commission investigating flawed intelligence on weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
In a statement, Bush said he and his wife, Laura, are "saddened" by the passing of Cutler, whom he called "a devoted public servant."
