Unclaimed Property Calls Flooding into Office
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- In the past two and a half weeks, more than ten-thousand people have contacted the state's unclaimed property division to see if they're owed money.
General Treasurer Paul Tavares says the response has been huge since the state put out this year's list of unclaimed property. He's encouraging people to file claims by e-mail. Most of the inquiries have to do with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Its conversion to a publicly held company resulted in 15-thousand Rhode Islanders being added to the list.
The overall list includes more than 124 (m) million dollars in unclaimed property owed to more than 150-thousand Rhode Islanders. The property includes bank accounts, payroll checks, stocks and dividends and life insurance policies.
