Former Mayor Cianci asks for 35-month sentence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Former Providence Mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci is asking for a 35-month prison sentence.
That's a lot shorter than the 64 months he was sentenced to originally after being convicted of racketeering conspiracy in 2002.
That sentence was thrown out this month by the federal appeals court in Boston because it was based on mandatory sentencing guildlines. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court ruled those were unconstitutional.
The 63-year-old Cianci has been in prison in Fort Dix, New Jersey, since December 2002.
Robert Corrente, the U-S Attorney for Rhode Island, has said Cianci's sentence shouldn't be reduced.
No resentencing date has been set. Earlier this week, Cianci said he hoped to appear at his resentencing through videoconferencing, rather than in person.
