Philip Morrison, one of the inventors of the A-bomb, dies at 89
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. One of the people who helped invent the atomic bomb has died. Philip Morrison was a group leader during the Manhattan Project. He was also there when the first atomic bomb was detonated on July 14, 1945 in New Mexico.
He also helped put together the bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, near the end of World War Two.
Morrison also was an early leader in the search for intelligent life on other planets. He was a professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The school says he died in his sleep Friday.
He was 89 years old.
