Rhode Island Education Up to Par
CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) -- A new report shows Rhode Island public and private high school students who make good grades in college preparatory courses are doing well at public colleges in the state. But the same report shows that the high school curriculum in Rhode Island does not seem to fully prepare students for college-level work.
Governor Donald Carcieri and others presented the report today at Cranston East High School during a visit there by U-S Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings. Meanwhile, Carcieri announced he has created a council to recommend ways to ensure that high schoolers get the skills they need to succeed at college and at work.
The P-K-through-16 Council will be chaired by Carcieri, and will include state education, economic and labor officials.
