Police chief says he will take concerns of brutality seriously
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- The Providence police chief says he there is no indication that excessive force was used against the man accused of killing a police detective yesterday.

Esteban Carpio appeared with a swollen and bruised face in court today, and with a spit shield covering the bottom of his face.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections says the shield is a universal precaution taken when someone is bleeding, or if authorities believe he might become combative.

Chief Dean Esserman says that if Carpios family has allegations or concerns that excessive force was used, the department will not be deaf to them.

Esserman also announced funeral arrangements for Allen.

A wake will be held Wednesday, and a funeral will be held the following day.
