Rhode Island youth take part in Kick Butts Day
PROVIDENCE, R.I. It's national "Kick Butts Day," and youth throughout Rhode Island are marking the occasion to cut down on teen smoking. More than 19 percent of high school students in the Ocean State smoke, according to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids; about three percent less than the national average. Tobacco use kills 1,700 residents yearly, the group says.
Students have planned a variety of activities in Rhode Island. In North Scituate, for example, Ponaganset Middle School students will paint their faces white and not speak for the day to symbolize deaths from smoking.
