Newport Grand Plans to turn Jai Alai Courts into Hotel
NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) -- Newport Grand officials hope to turn the former fronton into an 86-room hotel with space for dining and video gambling. The fronton housed jai alai contests until the gambling facility recently eliminated the sport.
Now, Newport Grand wants to spend 20 million dollars over the next three years on improvement to the facility -- mostly on modifying the fronton. Newport Grand general manager Diane Hurley described the plan to a Senate committee yesterday, and asked for an 18-year tax freeze. That's the same deal the prospective buyer of Lincoln Park is seeking for that facility.
