Student reinstated over photos of his high school principal
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A Providence high school student who was suspended after he posted photos on the Internet of his principal smoking on school grounds is back in school and will have his suspension wiped from his record.
The superintendent says the principal, Elaine Almagno made a mistake and should not have been smoking on school grounds.
Eliazar Velasquez, a sophomore at Central High School, snapped pictures of Principal Elaine Almagno smoking a cigarette outside a school door earlier this month. Smoking within 25 feet of a school violates state law.
Velasquez then posted the pictures on a Web site, and distributed fliers at school telling students where to find the pictures. He was suspended the day he distributed the fliers.
The superintendent says Velasquez had been suspended because he disrupted the learning environment at the school.
The suspension was lifted after the American Civil Liberties Union got involved, saying it raised freedom of speech and due-process issues.
