On radio, Bush cites progress in Mideast democracy effort
WHITE HOUSE President Bush says "spreading freedom's blessings is the calling of our time." In his weekly radio address, he hailed recent moves toward democracy across the Middle East and cited successful elections in Afghanistan, the Palestinian territories and Iraq. He also noted peaceful pro-democracy demonstrations in Beirut.
Bush has made spreading democracy abroad a key second-term foreign policy goal.
He says "when freedom and democracy take root in the Middle East, America and the world will be safer and more peaceful."
