Bush heads to Detroit to promote budget, Social Security plans
WHITE HOUSE President Bush heads to Detroit today to promote his budget and Social Security plans. A day after he sent Congress what he called a "lean" tax-and-spending blueprint, the president is speaking to the Detroit Economic Club.
Press Secretary Scott McClellan says in order to meet his goal of cutting the deficit by half in four years, Bush needs to spend taxpayer dollars wisely -- and focus them on programs that work.
The Detroit stop continues the Social Security tour Bush kicked off last week. After his State of the Union speech, he stopped in five states to promote his plan for private retirement accounts. Bush says those accounts will help save a system going broke.
Democrats are furious Bush is leaving big startup costs for the accounts out of his budget. But the White House says key details of the plan have yet to be decided.
