Senate panel O-K's Chertoff, full Senate could vote Tuesday
CAPITOL HILL The full Senate could vote as early as Tuesday on the man President Bush has chosen to head the Department of Homeland Security. A Senate committee has approved Michael Chertoff's nomination 14-to-nothing. Committee chairman Susan Collins of Maine predicts Chertoff will be easily approved by the full Senate.
One committee member, Carl Levin of Michigan, voted "present." He was denied Justice Department information about techniques used to interrogate detainees at the U-S prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Chertoff heads the department's criminal division that led the terror investigation after Nine-Eleven.
He would succeed Tom Ridge as Homeland Security secretary.
