Surgery goes well for Egyptian twin
DALLAS Doctors in Dallas say one of a set of formerly conjoined Egyptian is doing well following a four-hour surgery to reconstruct his skull. The surgery was the latest in a series of steps to ensure long-term survival for the three-year-old twins. Surgery to reconstruct the second boy's skull is set for next month.
A team of surgeons from the Dallas-based International Craniofacial Institute exposed Ahmed Ibrahim's skull and covered it with a substance designed to promote bone formation and growth. Then they added a layer of bone material, some of which was taken from Ahmed's thighs.
Ahmed must remain inactive during the next 10-12 weeks as new bone formation solidifies.
Ahmed and his twin Mohamed, born joined at the tops of their heads, were separated in October 2003.
