New York City to appeal ruling against state ban on same-sex marriage
NEW YORK New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the city will appeal a judge's ruling striking down the state ban on same-sex marriages. Bloomberg says he wants the issue to be settled in the state's highest court or in the Legislature. He says without an appeal, there could be chaos.
A judge ruled Friday that the state ban is unconstitutional, finding in favor of five same-sex couples who had been denied marriage licenses by the city.
Bloomberg, who says he supports allowing same-sex marriage, says he wants to avoid "a repetition of California, when many people for a month were misled into thinking they could get the union they so much wanted."
The ruling, the first of its kind in New York, would clear the way for gay couples to wed if it survives on appeal.
