Abu Ghraib guard pleads for mercy, says detainee abuse was mistake
FORT HOOD, Texas A sentencing hearing is expected to wrap up today for an Abu Ghraib prison guard who admitted abusing Iraqi detainees. Sergeant Javal Davis told a military jury yesterday he's "not G-I Joe" but he doesn't want his career to "go down the drain for some foolishness."
Davis reached a deal with prosecutors this week, pleading guilty to battery, dereliction of duty and lying to Army investigators. The 220-pound soldier admitted stepping on the feet and hands of detainees and falling on them. He blames his actions on job-related stress.
Davis says he's "embarrassed and ashamed" that he "embarrassed the country and the Army."
Davis' lawyer says the plea deal caps the sentence at 18 months.
