Providence mayor slams governor's proposed budget
PROVIDENCE, R.I. The budget plan Governor Don Carcieri announced last week isn't winning any praise from the mayor of Providence. Mayor David Cicilline says the proposal is "extremely disappointing."
He says it amounts to a backdoor hike in taxes. Although the budget doesn't add new taxes, it includes only a small increase in state aid to Providence.
Cicilline says because the aid increase is smaller than the consumer price index, the budget plan would mean property taxes in the city would likely have to be raised.
The mayor says the budget plan poses particular problems for the city's schools.
