House Speaker says new law shouldn't keep lawmakers off lottery board
PROVIDENCE, R.I. House Speaker William Murphy says despite recently passed Separation of Powers legislation, he's confident lawmakers can continue serving on the state Lottery Commission. In November, voters approved a constitutional change removing lawmakers and their appointees from dozens of state board and commissions.
Most of those appointments would be made by Governor Don Carcieri.
But while Murphy thinks the Lottery Commission isn't affected by the change, others argue it is.
Common Cause executive director Phillip West told The Providence Journal he's sure Murphy is wrong.
West said his group would challenge Murphy's interpretation in court if necessary.
