North Carolina health investigators trace E. coli outbreak to petting zoo at fair
RALEIGH, N.C. An E. coli outbreak in North Carolina has been traced to a petting zoo at the state fair. State health officials say the cases apparently originated at the Crossroads Farm Petting Zoo exhibition at the fair in October.
The state's largest outbreak of E. coli in three years involved 108 cases. While most people suffered mild symptoms, 15 children became very sick. Two-thirds of those sickened were under age 18.
