President of Pa. college retiring amid sex allegations
PITTSBURGH A Pennsylvania college president is stepping down amid allegations that he had improper sexual contact with minors in the 1960s and 1970s. Mercyhurst College president William Garvey has been under a cloud since the Erie Times-News reported that six men allege Garvey had improper sexual contact with them when he was a basketball coach at a Roman Catholic grade school.
Garvey is 69, and has been president of the Roman Catholic liberal arts college in Erie since 1980. He also cited health reasons for his decision to leave, which takes effect in February.
