Flu shot restrictions may cause doses to go to waste
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

ATLANTA First there was a fear there wouldn't be enough flu vaccine available. Now health officials worry that tens of thousands of doses could go to waste -- and earlier restrictions might be eased.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention admits there appears to have been an unintended effect from the government response to the flu shot shortage. Officials say more than half of all elderly or chronically ill adults have not even tried to get flu shots, figuring they wouldn't be able to get one.

One influenza expert says it would be a sin to leave vaccine on the shelf unused.

A C-D-C advisory panel is expected to hold an emergency conference call tomorrow to discuss ways of remedying the situation.
