WARWICK, R.I. Former boxer Vinny Paz was arrested early this morning on suspicion of drunken driving.

Warwick police Captain Matthew Costello says Paz was picked up after police spotted the car he was driving swerve on the road. Police say he was going 60 miles-per-hour in a 30-mile-per-hour zone.

Costello says Paz's speech was slurred and his eyes looked bloodshot and watery.

He was arrested for refusing a breathalyzer test and resisting arrest.

Police say Paz, who changed his name from Pazienza, struggled as officers tried to handcuff him at his car.

The 42-year-old Paz was released on a summons and is scheduled to appear in District Court in January.

Paz is a former World Boxing Association super middleweight champion and International Boxing Federation lightweight champion.

He retired in March after his 50th professional boxing victory.
