Residents of contaminated apartments to return home
PAWTUCKET, R.I. Residents of a Pawtucket apartment complex contaminated by a mercury spill are heading back to their homes today. Nearly 150 people were evacuated from the Lawn Terrace apartment complex in October, after vandals broke into a New England Gas storage facility and stole a glass jar containing mercury. The stolen mercury was traced to the apartment complex.
Many residents have spent the past two months in a hotel while the mercury was removed from their apartments.
Cleanup work is still being done in one building, but tenants in other buildings in the complex have been cleared to return.
Tenants who lost property are being compensated by the gas company.
