Corporate, academic leaders recommend business, social changes
WASHINGTON University presidents and leading chief executives complain that stiff immigration laws after Nine-Eleven are "contributing to a declining inflow of scientific talent." The Washington-based Council on Competitiveness wants the White House to support certain business, social and educational changes it says will foster innovation and economic success.
In a report being released today, the group says it wants the government to expand education scholarships and fellowships, and change immigration laws to permit more foreign students to come to the U-S.
The group says, "The consequences of not affording this are not only unpleasant but almost calamitous."
Its members include chief executives of I-B-M, BellSouth, American Airlines, Verizon, PepsiCo and General Motors.
