Officer Charged with Drug Trafficking
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A 24-year-old New York City police officer and another man pleaded guilty on Monday to cocaine trafficking. The officer, Jose Gabriel Delvalle, and Basilio Aquiles Delvalle, 34, admitted in federal court they conspired to buy a kilogram of cocaine in Rhode Island in October.
The defendants, both of New York, were arrested in Warwick in October and have been held at a federal detention center in Central Falls, according to the U.S. Attorney's office in Rhode Island. Tom Connell, the office's spokesman, said the two are related, possibly as cousins. Sentencing for both is scheduled for March 4. Prosecutors said the pair had plans to buy an additional nine kilos of cocaine.
Jose Delvalle was carrying his New York City police credentials and was armed with his police-issued service weapon at the time of his arrest. It was not immediately clear whether the defendants are related.
