Study: War affects news coverage of Hispanics
LOS ANGELES Television news coverage of Hispanics is improving, but it still has a long way to go. That's the conclusion of a report being released Monday.
"Network Brownout 2003" was prepared for the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. It examined more than 16-thousand stories on the nightly newscasts of A-B-C, C-B-S, N-B-C and C-N-N.
The percentage of stories about Hispanics increased slightly between 2002 and 2003, from three-quarters of one percent to about eight-tenths of one percent. Much of that is attributed to reports on the wartime service of Hispanic troops.
At nearly 14 percent of the U-S population, Hispanics are the nation's largest and fastest growing minority.
The report concludes the amount of coverage and airtime devoted to Latino stories remains "dismal."
