Mormon author suspended for questioning church's origins
SANDY, Utah A retired Mormon educator who wrote a book questioning the church's foundational teachings has been suspended from the church at a heresy hearing in Utah. Grant Palmer, who could have been excommunicated, says he's pleased with the decision.
Neither he nor the church would comment on the length of his suspension.
Grant Palmer's book -- "An Insider's View of Mormon Origins" -- suggests that Joseph Smith didn't actually translate the Book of Mormon from an ancient set of golden plates. Instead, it suggests Smith penned it himself and that the plates might never have existed.
The 64-year-old Palmer says he still loves the Mormon church and wants to remain a member because he believes in its fundamental message.
