SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) -- Red Sox slugger David Ortiz will not play baseball this winter in his native Dominican Republic because of a nagging injury in his right shoulder.

Ortiz says he feels very strong discomfort in the shoulder and wants to rest it so he is ready for spring training. He says the injury happened in August during a game against the Detroit Tigers and he needed cortisone shots to finish the season.

He finished last season with a .301 average, 41 homers and 138 R-B-Is. He was named M-V-P of the American League Championship series.

Ortiz has played winter ball for the Escogido Lions for seven consecutive seasons dating back to 1997.
