DATELINE The Narragansett Police Department is stepping up to help the troops overseas.
The department has offered to donate 35 surplus bulletproof vests to the Rhode Island National Guard for use in Iraq.
The Guard is investigating whether it can accept the equipment.
Lieutenant Colonel Mike McNamara says the Rhode Island troops are well-equipped. He says the nearly 300 Guard members serving in Iraq have proper protection.
Questions about soldiers' gear was highlighted this week when a soldiers asked Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld why his unit had to look through junkyards to find additional materials to reinforce armored vehicles.
