Chief Justice assures state workers health coverage will continue
PROVIDENCE, R.I. The chief justice of the state Supreme Court is assuring state employees that their health coverage won't be interrupted despite an ongoing legal battle over the contract for their health care. The Supreme Court is preparing to hear an appeal of a lower court ruling that's preventing the state from awarding the contract to UnitedHealthcare of New England.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Rhode Island had challenged the state's decision to award the contract to United, saying the bid process was unfair.
A lower court agreed, and the state appealed to the Supreme Court.
Hearings in the case are expected soon.
